Review

This is official description applies to version 12.5

PKZIP continues to be the gold standard in data compression and file management, evolving as your needs have changed. PKZIP compresses and extracts files to greatly reduce required storage space and transmission times. And, by using the ZIP standard, the most widely used file standard in the world, you can easily exchange data across all major computing platforms more efficiently and effectively.

The following review written by one of the Software Informer contributors applies to version 9.0

This is a commercial file compression utility for Windows. With PKZIP, you can open, create and extract compressed archives. You can use it, among other things, to open you email compressed attachments and to compress your Word documents in order to save disk space. This program comes in two versions, Standard and Enterprise.

It's compatible with Windows 98, NT 4 SP6, 2000 SP4, or XP SP2 and requires Internet Explorer 5.0 or later. This program integrates with Outlook 2000, XP or 2007, mainly to simplify the process of compressing/extracting email attachments. It has some advanced security functions like Smart Card management system integration and centralized policy management.

On the other hand, though it's somewhat expensive, it's quite modest about its real functionality. First of all, PKZIP, as its name probably implies, can only compress archives in ZIP format. This means that you can't choose another compression algorithm more suitable to your specific needs. Although it can open the most popular compression formats like zip, bz2, tbz, bz, cab, tar, gz, tgz, rar, lzh, lha, arj, uue, xxe, hqx and jar, it's unable to open ISO disk images. Something that Power Archiver and ALZip do pretty well.

With this program, you can add comments and encrypt your compressed archives, something useful but nothing extraordinary, since these functions are available in most compression utilities. The interface is nice, intuitive and easy to use but you won't find any advanced functions like batch compression/extraction or spanning. It can't repair corrupted files, not even the ZIP ones.

It supports Windows Explorer integration, but if you consider that Windows opens, extracts and creates ZIP compressed archives by default, it's really hard to find a reason to buy this piece of software.

PKZIP seems to be more focused on the Enterprise with strong security file compression policies and the need of Microsoft Outlook integration. Therefore, it's something that most humans will never need.

If you are looking for a file compression utility and want to pay for a full featured solution, you should consider PowerArchiver, WinZip or WinRAR. If you just need a free and powerful compression utility to satisfy your daily needs, you should definitively try ALZip, 7Zip or QuickZip.
  • Seamless integration with Microsoft Outlook, if you think that's an advantage.
  • Supports advanced security functions.
  • It compress only in ZIP format.
  • It's quite expensive when compared to its competitors.

What's new in version 12.5

Microsoft Office 2010 Support. PKZIP Office Integration allows you to create ZIP archives directly from 32-bit and 64-bit implementations of Microsoft Office 2010 applications, including Outlook, Word and Excel.
Extract WavPack files within ZIP archives. Open audio files compressed with this algorithm.
Extract files from archives created on IBM z/OS using hardware compression tools. SecureZIP for Windows Desktop can extract these files without special hardware.
Improved support for PPMd compression algorithm on 64-bit Windows. No need to run 32-bit version of this algorithm.
Changes in FIPS Mode. With FIPS mode selected, files must be signed with the SHA-256 algorithm (or higher). Also will not extract files encrypted with 112-bit (two-key) 3DES. These algorithms are still available outside FIPS mode.
